A prerequisite for high speed extrusion of PE-RT tubing is the proper extrusion equipment. Unlike ordinary HDPE materials, PE-RT has a narrow molecular weight distribution, which makes the design of its extruded parts different from HDPE. To this end, Battenfeld's pipe extrusion experts have carefully modified the company's extrusion components designed for HDPE pipes to achieve the goal of high-speed extrusion of PE-RT pipes and to ensure the high quality of the pipes.
The line uses Battenfeld's high performance single screw extruder BCE1-60-30B. Its optimized design of the barrier screw and slotted barrel guarantees a homogeneous melt and a stable extrusion. The extruder is equipped with a high-torque gearbox that is sufficient to handle higher PE backpressure than HDPE.
The production line mainly produces PE-RT pipes of 20x2.0mm and 16x2.0mm. The die used is a basket die that has been successfully used for the production of HDPE pipes for a long time. Through the modification of the existing die, the melt fracture during the extrusion process is effectively avoided, and the high smoothness of the surface of the PE-RT pipe is ensured. The disc-type sizing sleeve is applied because of the minimum friction with the surface of the pipe. The spray water ring installed in front of the sizing sleeve forms a wet surface on the surface of the pipe to prevent the pipe from sticking to the sizing sleeve.
In addition to the extruded parts, the perfectly matched downstream equipment is also very important for PE-RT tubing that guarantees high speed extrusion quality.
The total cooling length of the line is approximately 27 meters, including a double chamber vacuum sizing machine and three cooling water tanks. The purpose of the cooling length configuration is to meet the cooling required to produce 20x2.0 mm tubing at a line speed of 25 m/min, taking into account the additional cooling required for the coil.
Battenfeld chose a flying knife cutter to support the PE-RT pipe production line among its many types of cutting machines. The high-speed production of PE-RT tubing is cut by a tool mounted directly on the AC servo motor of the flying knife cutter, resulting in a very smooth cut without any sawdust.
PE-RT tubing is usually supplied in rolls to facilitate installation of the underfloor heating piping system. Battenfeld has developed the semi-automatic double-station coiler HW1300/2 for pipes up to 32 mm in diameter. The coiler has two modes of operation, the low speed mode is used when starting the new volume, and the full speed mode with tension control is used in normal production. The continuous wire-discharging device driven by the motor ensures that the coil is neat and the maximum coil length is 300m. Only one person is required to operate the coil machine, including starting a new volume.
