The world's smallest ultra-sensitive tactile sensor

The research team led by Professor Hiroshima Yuji of the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Japan has successfully developed the world's smallest ultra-sensitive tactile sensor, which has broad application prospects in the field of medical devices.

The sensor embeds a spiral-like fine carbon coil element having a diameter of 1 to 10 μm and a length of 300 to 500 μm as a spring in a synthetic resin of about 0.1 mm 3 . When the carbon coil contacts the object, it will convert small pressure and temperature changes into electrical signals. In addition, the sensor can also sense "screw", "friction" and the like.

Prof. Yuandao said that compared with the past sensors, it is not expensive, and its sensitivity is thousands of times higher. It is installed on the top of surgical instruments such as medical robots, catheters and endoscopes to judge the changes on the surface of the organs and tumors. The location, etc., will be of great help to inexperienced doctors.

At present, there are still some problems in the sensing range and sensitivity control of the carbon coil in the sensor. The researchers plan to improve it and bring it to the market within 5 years.
