The US Naval Research Laboratory has developed a new, lightweight, lightweight sensor that consists of silicon nanowires (SiN-VAPORs) that are vertically arranged on porous electrodes to improve detection of improvised explosives (IEDs) . The SiN-VAPOR project aims to develop a battlefield deployable distributed sensor that can be installed on a mobile phone. Its three-dimensional structure, composed of vertically aligned silicon nanowires, can be integrated into cell phones for chemical detection. Researchers at the Naval Research Laboratory hope to promote this low-power, low-cost sensor to revolutionize detection of trace chemicals in the battlefield or airport environments. SiN-VAPOR sensors, still in the early stages of research and development, are one-billionth, or even one-trillionth, sensitive to the detection of trace chemicals. The project manager said the technology will serve soldiers and consumers on the battlefield as soon as possible. Naval laboratories are currently seeking ways to maximize SiN-VAPOR surface area to increase sensor sensitivity. In addition, SiN-VAPOR sensors can also help bomb sniffer dogs detect suspicious objects, improve airport security.
