As a truck owner or driver, in the daily use and maintenance process will certainly worry about the frequent replacement of brake pads, which will not only cause increased transportation costs, but also reduce the time out of the car. Because if the vehicle is running at high speed or overload for a long time, frequent braking will inevitably greatly accelerate the wear of the brake pads and increase the possibility of thermal degradation of the brake pads. In addition, frequently operating the brake pedal during long-distance transportation driving will also increase the fatigue of the driver and affect the safety of the vehicle.

The latest generation of inertial coast retarder is Scania's completely self-developed retarder, which can fully reduce the brake system and the driver's burden on steep slopes and complex mountain road sections. The new Scania Retarder (R4100D) automatically disengages the driveline and enters the coasting mode when not activated, reducing drag losses. When the retarder is not working, the two impellers that rotate in the hydraulic oil and provide braking power will disengage from the transmission on the transmission, thereby reducing the resistance and energy consumption and achieving the purpose of reducing fuel consumption. Although the actual fuel savings will vary depending on the road conditions, the use of new retarders on average can reduce fuel consumption by around 0.5%.

When using Scania's new retarder, the driver does not need any extra action. When braking power is required, inertial rotation is stopped, and by means of a synchronous method similar to that used in the Scania gearbox, the retarder and the drive system will immediately and smoothly mesh. The new inertial wheel retarder does not require any additional energy consumption, and its torque has also been increased from 3,500 Nm to 4,100 Nm, providing a strong braking force for trucks. In addition, with a higher gear ratio, the braking effect at low engine speeds is also increased.

The retarder can be activated by the driver through the lever on the column or lightly depressing the brake pedal, or when the automatic cruise control system requests braking. Once the retarder is in an unused state, it will automatically switch to inertial mode again. However, it can be quickly and smoothly switched from the inertial state to the full braking state at any time.
