For traditional car companies, the development of autonomous driving technology requires huge capital investment, and more professional hardware and software technology is required, so they are actively seeking alliances.
BMW announced on August 16 that the Autopilot Alliance was established in 2016 with the goal of launching mass-produced self-driving cars in 2021. The automatic driving level will cover the L3, L4 and L5 of the SAE classification standard. This timeline coincides with the timing of many other automakers and Internet technology companies that independently engage in autonomous driving research.
FCA has partnered with Google's autopilot division, Waymo, to bring engineering, technical resources and experience in the North American market to the new alliance. Sergio Marchionne, CEO of FCA, said joining the autopilot alliance could bring economies of scale. He believes that car companies need to cooperate to be able to jointly undertake costly advanced technologies.
The automotive supplier Delphi and Continental are also members of the Autopilot Alliance. The alliance will officially begin testing 40 auto-driving vehicles at the end of 2017. In addition, Mobileye will also manufacture 100 self-driving cars for testing in the US by the end of the year.
