On June 29, 2011, the V80, the first wide-body lightweight passenger car of the Datong MAXUS brand, which SAIC Commercial Vehicle put into production in the Wuxi branch, officially went offline, and will be officially listed at the end of August 2011 and will be simultaneously on the international market. For a long time, SAIC has been a leader in the field of passenger cars. Commercial vehicles are its shortcomings. Today, SAIC Motor’s overall layout in the commercial vehicle sector is underway.
According to SAIC's plans for the development of commercial vehicles, 20% of the total annual investment in the future will be in the commercial vehicle sector, including Chongqing Iveco Hongyan’s main heavy truck, Nanjing Iveco’s main light trucks and light passengers, and independent brand Maxus Chase’s first major lighter passengers. During the 12th Five-Year Plan period, the production and sales volume of SAIC's commercial vehicles will reach 400,000-500,000 vehicles.
The Datong brand, the new arm of SAIC’s commercial vehicle, was the SAIC Group’s acquisition of the Maxus brand intellectual property and technology platform of the British Commercial Vehicle Company in 2009, and brought the Maxus brand to China, after more than a year of digestion and execution. Domestically matched, Maxus Chase, an independent mid- to high-end commercial vehicle brand, was eventually established. On April 19, 2011, the Maxus Chase V80, an international benchmark commercial multi-purpose vehicle (MPV), had its debut at the Shanghai International Auto Show.
As the pioneering brand of SAIC's own brand of commercial vehicles, Maxus Chase's production base is located in Wuxi, with a planned production capacity of 200,000 vehicles. The first models to be listed are school buses, commuter cars, and the wide-body light passengers used in the postal, tourism, and logistics industries. Afterwards, luxury commercial series will be available.
The commercial vehicle business is an important part of SAIC Motor's strategy of cooperating with merchants. The SAIC Commercial Vehicle Chase brand is not only an international brand launched for the global commercial vehicle sector, but also a major measure for SAIC's differentiation strategy. In 2011, SAIC Motor strived to sell 4 million vehicles, of which commercial vehicle sales will reach 200,000. At present, SAIC's commercial vehicle production base includes four bases in Wuxi, Nanjing, Chongqing and Shanghai.
The SAIC Commercial Vehicle Wuxi Plant completed the entire plant expansion, equipment installation, commissioning and trial production in just 13 months, and established a domestic first-class lean, flexible, modular, and information-based commercial vehicle production base. In 2015, it will form an annual production capacity of 100,000 vehicles. At present, Datong V80 has completed three rounds of nearly 700,000 kilometers of test verification in Hainan, Dingyuan, Fuyang and the United Kingdom.
