Qingdao Aquarium Welcomes 80th Anniversary of Asia's First Aquarium

Qingdao, May 8th - Qingdao Aquarium, the first aquarium in Asia on the Yellow Sea coast of China, celebrates its 80th birthday on the 8th. The Qingdao Aquarium is also known as the Qingdao Seafood Museum and the Qingdao Ocean Science and Technology Museum. In 1930, a group of pioneers of Chinese modern science and technology, led by famous Chinese democratic revolutionary, scientist and educator Cai Yuanpei, initiated the construction and was officially opened on May 8, 1932. The museum is the first aquarium in China and Asia.

Xu Shanyan, chairman of the Association of Natural Science Museums of China, said in his speech on the 8th that the founder of the Qingdao Aquarium is not a bureaucrat, not a merchant, but a famous Chinese thinker and educator, Cai Yuanpei, and a group of people with lofty ideals. Therefore, from the day it was born, the pavilion is oriented towards the public and the community and is responsible for continuously enriching the marine knowledge of the public and helping people understand the sea and understand the duties of the sea. Qingdao Aquarium, which has gone through 80 years of glorious history, has to shoulder the heavy burden of marine science.

According to Qi Jiguang, the current director of the Qingdao Aquarium, after nearly a century of development, the Qingdao Aquarium has developed from the first two open-air water tanks, 18 fish tanks, and less than 100 square meters of showrooms to four exhibition halls on the ground. A cluster of characteristic venues with an underwater world and an exhibition area of ​​nearly 10,000 square meters has become an important science education base, a youth education base for science and technology, and a 4A-class tourist attraction in China. In 2011, Qingdao Aquarium received 2 million visits.

It is reported that in order to celebrate the 80th anniversary of the establishment of the museum, the Qingdao Aquarium also launched the “Science Caravan Caravan Shandong” event on the 8th. The specializing science team will dispatch two science caravans and carry out popular science activities in the western part of Shandong Province, China.
