Kawasaki Heavy Industries successfully developed 3MW superconducting motor

On May 29, Kawasaki Heavy Industries Co., Ltd. announced that it has developed a superconducting propulsion motor for use in medium-sized ships. It is intended to be used in propulsion systems such as working ships (offshore oil support ships) and liquefied natural gas (LNG) transport ships used for oil and gas field development. Through the prototype performance test, it is confirmed that the output power of 3MW can be achieved. According to Kawasaki Heavy Industries, the output power (output power density) per unit volume of the motor is "the highest in the world, reducing fuel consumption for ship propulsion by 20%."
Kawasaki Heavy Industries adopted a configuration in which the superconducting coil was placed in the rotating part of the motor, so that the new motor achieved 3MW of output power in half the size of the previous electric propulsion system motor. Motor efficiency is also as high as 98%. In Japan, the maximum output power of a superconducting motor for ships in Japan was 1 MW of a prototype machine developed by Kawasaki Heavy Industries in 2010.
Although operating ships and special ships generally employ electric propulsion systems that use electric power generated by diesel generators to drive propulsion motors, in order to further reduce fuel consumption, development of propulsion systems using superconducting motors has begun.
