With the rise of the enterprise cloud boom and the success of some related companies with CASB product financing, CASB has gradually become the new darling of data security. At this year's RSA Conference 2017, Cloud Access Security Agent (CASB) has undoubtedly become the focus of attention of the entire industry. Many companies worldwide, such as Skyhigh, Netskope, and 360, have demonstrated CASB products and solutions.
So what is CASB? The CASB (Cloud Access Security Broker) concept was proposed by Gartner in 2012 and defines a solution model for enterprises or users to control data security on the cloud in the new era of cloud computing. CASB products have two working modes: one is Proxy mode and the other is API mode.
In Proxy mode, CASB needs to process all the traffic that the enterprise uploads to the cloud application. The important data is processed by encryption and other security policies and then uploaded to the cloud service provider.
In the API model, enterprise data is passed directly to the cloud service provider. CASB uses the API of the cloud application to control access to users and enforce corporate security policies.
Gartner predicts that less than 1% of companies will use CASB from 2012, and 85% of large companies will use CASB by 2020. The CASB model has become the guiding standard for third-party security service providers, and it mainly defines products from four directions:
Visualization
CASB provides automatic discovery support for cloud services, shadow services, and centralized view display, including user behavior and statistical support for client devices. It detects, blocks, and records abnormal behaviors.
Compliance
After CASB helps enterprise IT systems migrate to the cloud, they can still meet compliance requirements and perform trust rating, content monitoring, and audit log functions for cloud service providers.
Data Security
CASB combines multiple dimensions such as people, equipment, content, and applications to provide data security protection such as DLP, Encryption, and Tokenization to prevent data leakage in the cloud.
Threat protection
CASB monitors cloud data and user resource usage status, discovers threats in time, and makes defenses.
Through the basic functions of CASB we can understand the following points:
1) CASB is deployed at the enterprise network boundary and is located between the enterprise network and cloud service vendors.
2) The main CASB scenario is for internal users to access various SAAS services or PAAS services.
3) CASB mainly prevents internal core data of the enterprise from being stored to uncontrollable cloud services.
With the popularization of cloud technologies and virtualization technologies, more and more enterprises have no data center equipment rooms in the traditional sense. Various business systems have been migrated to the cloud, including enterprise mailboxes, enterprise network disks, CRM, ERP, and OA. Various business systems such as HR and HR are hosted by cloud service providers. The scale and intensive nature of computing resources have greatly improved office efficiency. In this situation, storage resources become shared, and enterprises lose their security control over applications and data. They need to enjoy convenient cloud services and lose control of their own data. Based on this expectation, the future of CASB is in demand. This is also the mainstream voice in the industry. CASB's proposal is based on the status of cloud services in the United States: various SAAS or PAAS are popular, such as Salesforce, Office365, and box. Many cloud services are already mature and even become the mainstream of the enterprise. There is still a big gap compared to the development of domestic SAAS, such as the United States. The benchmarking company Salesforce was listed in the United States in 2004, and domestic companies that do similar services, such as affiliate sales, have only begun to take the lead in recent years. Based on this status, the CASB market will not break out in a short time.
In addition, the main customers of many US service companies are large private enterprises. However, most Chinese large enterprises are state-owned enterprises or central enterprises. BD has high costs and it is difficult to sell. On the contrary, the number of SMEs in China is even larger and more active. Therefore, the follow-up SMEs will be the mainstream users of SAAS. The potential customers of CASB are also very different. For the consideration of cost, small and medium-sized enterprises will have additional incentives to purchase additional specialized CASB equipment. This is a lot of CASB vendors need to consider, and they cannot blindly chase hot spots. One set must find out a CASB product service model suitable for the Chinese market.
