Aspects of National IV Standard Products of Mainstream Diesel Engine Enterprises

On December 29, 2011, the Ministry of Environmental Protection issued the “Announcement on the Implementation of National Phase IV Standards for Vehicle Combustion Engine and Vehicle Pollutants Emissions”, and the implementation time of the National IV emission standards was July 1, 2013. After the implementation of the National IV Standard was postponed, it finally settled. To take this opportunity, the reporter conducted a survey on the national IV products of five major engine companies.

Weichai: China IV products are widely available

Weichai started to develop the National IV product very early. In 2010, it was already able to provide the National IV engine product. In the field of 10-12 liter heavy truck engines, the Weichai Blue Engine II has reached international advanced level in terms of economy, power, reliability and comfort, and meets the requirements of the National IV and National V emission regulations. There are two technical routes for Weichai to implement State IV: one is the EGR+DPF technology route; the other is the optimization of the combustion+SCR technology route. The SCR technology has the technical advantages that it can reduce fuel consumption through optimizing combustion, the inheritance of the engine platform of the National IV and China V, and the easy availability of the reductant urea product. Combining with the actual situation in China, Weichai selected SCR technology as the main technical route for achieving national IV and national V emissions. Weichai and many domestic vehicle manufacturers have cooperation, including Shaanxi Automobile, Foton, Bei Ben, SAIC Iveco Hongyan, Yutong, Beiqi Foton, Xiamen Jinlong, Shanghai Vientiane, North China, Jinhua Youth, etc.; Associated Press, Sany Heavy Industry, and Changqi. Using SCR technology to achieve the State IV Weichai products in addition to the emission of less pollutants, the fuel consumption than the State III models decreased by 5%-7%.

Xichai: National IV product serialization

Xichai launched eight national IV series products at the end of 2010, and serialized national IV products have been formed. The technical route of Xichai’s implementation of State IV is two types: high pressure common rail + SCR and high pressure common rail + EGR + POC. Among them, China IV series diesel engines such as CA6DN1, CA6DM2, CA6DL, and CA4DL1 adopt the SCR technology route, and CA6DL1, CA6DL2, CA6DLD, and other national IV series diesel engines use SCR and EGR+POC dual technology routes. The emission of diesel products of both routes has reached the national IV standard. Xichai and Yutong Bus, Suzhou Jinlong Bus, Huanghai Bus, Jiangyin Changlong Bus, FAW Jiefang, Shaanxi Automobile, Beiqi Futian, Jianghuai, Beiben Heavy Truck and other manufacturers. According to report, since 2011, Xichai’s National IV engine has exceeded 1,000 units in the passenger car market.

Yuchai: China IV product development

Yuchai's research and development time for China IV products was earlier. As early as February 2006, Yuchai launched China's first national IV diesel engine with independent intellectual property rights. Yuchai has three routes to achieve the national IV emission standards. One is the SCR route; the second is the EGR+DOC route; and the third is the EGR+POC+DOC. Yuchai also has a large number of OEMs. The buses include Xiamen Jinlong Bus and Huanghai Bus. The trucks include Dongfeng Liuqi and FAW Liberation.

China National Heavy Duty Truck: supporting companies started to expand

The engine business is another major business of China National Heavy Duty Truck and it has also achieved good results in recent years. The technical route for China National Heavy Duty Truck Group to achieve the national IV emission standard is the SCR post-processing technology route. On the basis of the State III common-rail engine, the engine emission is achieved through the SCR technology to the national IV standard. China National Heavy Duty Truck Engines are mainly used to meet the internal engine requirements of the Group and to support their own vehicles. Currently, CNHTC Engine not only meets the internal needs of the Group, but also has begun to provide support for some domestic heavy truck companies. For example, Dongfeng Liuzhou Automobile, Anhui Hualing, Jianghuai Automobile and others all use engines from China National Heavy Duty Truck. Compared with the China III engine, the CNHTC IV engine is identical to the State III engine in terms of the structure of the engine body. Only the fuel injector, ECU, and other components have different specifications. The fuel consumption of State IV products is lower by 6%-7% than that of State III products, and urea consumption is also relatively low.

Dongfeng Cummins: China IV products have many advantages

Dongfeng Cummins has started mass production of China IV engines since 2009. Dongfeng Cummins' ISDe Series IV products are based on the Cummins ISDe III engine and are developed using Cummins CES SCR aftertreatment technology. Dongfeng Cummins mainly supplies engines for Dongfeng Motor Company and its subsidiaries, and also supplies engines for Anhui Hualing, Yutong Bus, Xiamen Jinlong Bus and Liugong Machinery. Compared with the National IIIISDe series, the external dimensions of the National IV product are the same as those of the National III product, and the engine torque and power have all been greatly improved. The fuel economy is 5%-7% higher than that of the State III engine, and it also has the advantage of low noise. Dongfeng Cummins's National IV products can also be directly upgraded to Euro V emission standards.
