On April 21, 2015, Eaton demonstrated an innovative vehicle-mounted oil-gas recovery system (ORVR) at the 16th Shanghai International Automobile Industry Exhibition . This vehicle emission control technology has been applied in the United States for nearly 20 years. It can collect fuel vapors that are volatilized during refueling and can be reused as fuel, thus reducing about 95% of hydrocarbon emissions during vehicle refuelling. Industry data shows that during the refueling of vehicles, a large amount of hydrocarbons are discharged to the atmosphere through the oil filling port, which is one of the important causes of smog. The Chinese government has already begun drafting regulations for ORVR requirements to solve the serious environmental pollution problems in China. It is reported that ORVR-related laws and regulations will be officially released in 2015, and will be implemented in early 2017, and gradually spread from Beijing and Guangzhou to other major cities and regions in the country. Krishnakumar Srinivasan, president of Eaton Vehicles Asia Pacific, stated: “At present, there are two main forms of fueling and oil recovery systems. One is a secondary oil and gas recovery system used at gas stations, and the other is an onboard oil and gas recovery system. (ORVR) Eaton is committed to helping local and global customers and governments solve the toughest power challenges, and our on-board refuelling gas recovery system has proven to be one of the most effective solutions to help reduce hydrocarbons." From 1998 to 2001, ORVR system has been widely applied in the United States. Eaton started early in ORVR's R&D and supplied the first ORVR system's fuel steam valve in 1997. Today, Eaton has a very large customer base for fuel steam valves worldwide. In addition to ORVR systems, Eaton also offers a variety of other fuel emission solutions, including the Fuel Tank Isolation Valve (FTIV) for plug-in hybrid vehicles. The FTIV is a multi-stage, purely electric valve body that shuts off the path when the engine is not in operation, preventing the canister from being overloaded and preventing the fuel vapors from being discharged to the outside world. When the car is operating in pure electric mode, FTIV can effectively control the pressure in the tank and the discharge of hydrocarbons into the canister. When the car is running in the engine mode, the canister desorbs under the vacuum of the intake manifold, and the fuel vapor enters the engine to generate power through the intake manifold. Eaton now offers a variety of plug-in hybrid modules based on FTIV technology.
