Proponents of 3D printing technology have long talked about the possibility of customizing consumer products using the technology, one of the most compelling possibilities being the printing of biosensors from runners with individual runners. Today, the Gulf region 3D printing company Carbon announced that it has achieved this function. 3D printing soles Photo Source: "Technical Review" Carbon has partnered with apparel company Adidas to develop the midsole material, design and cushioning of sports shoes. Adidas will sell the "Future Craftsmanship" 4D type shoes, the middle of the soles printed on the Carbon machine. By 2018, Adidas will produce the midsole of millions of shoes, and Carbon said it is the company's largest 3D printing product to date. Although the first product has not been individually customized, custom work is already in progress. Adidas is about to begin using Carbon's printers at its distributed manufacturing centers, and the company will make custom-made shoes for local customers. Carbon, formerly Carbon 3D, was co-founded by chemical engineer Joseph Desmond in 2013 with others. Desmond has commercialized his materials and workmanship research to enable faster 3D printing with high-performance polymers. Desmond received the Lysen-MIT Prize in 2008 and is engaged in materials stents, nanomedicine and many other applications. Currently, and as the company's CEO, he is teaching at the University of North Carolina.
