Wang Xia: Challenges and Hopes Intertwined with Commercial Vehicles Welcome Five Key Stages

Wang Xia, chairman of the CCPIT Automobile Industry Branch, said: "At present, China's commercial vehicle industry is facing five major 'critical periods' - the key period of structural adjustment, the key period of innovation, the key period of industry mergers and acquisitions, and the development of new energy commercial vehicles. In the critical period, the critical period for China's commercial vehicles to fully "go global"."

Wang Xia, Chairman, Automotive Industry Branch, China Council for the Promotion of International Trade

In the past decade, the highly-growing Chinese economy has driven the rapid development of China's auto industry. China has become the world's largest car producer and consumer, and also the largest producer and seller of commercial vehicles. At present, China's commercial vehicle production and sales have been close to half of the world. China's auto industry has laid the foundation for the development of commercial vehicles, and commercial vehicles are a model of independent innovation in the auto industry and occupy a pivotal position in the development of automobiles.

In recent years, China's commercial vehicle industry is facing unprecedented difficulties. Since 2011, the commercial vehicle market has continued to decline. From January to September this year, the production and sales of commercial vehicles fell by 12% year-on-year, coupled with the emergence of export unfavorable factors, which made the entire industry face enormous challenges.

At the China International Commercial Vehicle Summit held on the theme of “New Normal, New Opportunities, and New Hope” held during the 2015 Wuhan Commercial Vehicle Show, Wang Xia, Chairman of the China Council for the Promotion of International Trade Automobile Industry, said: “At present, China’s commercial The automobile industry faces five key periods: the key period of structural adjustment, the critical period of innovation, the key period of industry mergers and acquisitions, the critical period for the development of new energy commercial vehicles, and the critical period for China's commercial vehicles to fully “go global”. The key period can also be understood as a turning point, a turning point for the commercial vehicle industry entering a new stage of development, and a turning point where puzzles, challenges, and hopes are intertwined."

Wang Xia pointed out that the concept of "innovation, coordination, green, openness, and sharing" in the "13th Five-Year Plan" proposal recently released was based on the comprehensive summary and profound reflection of the past socio-economic development. At the same time, it reflects the basic judgment of the future economic trends.

The "new normal" has vividly revealed the law of social development. For the commercial vehicle industry, it is unlikely to return to the previous market demand level. Abandoning the excessive consumption of resources, and the extensive and inefficient development model, abandoning the thought of increasing input and increasing production and sales to stimulate industry growth, supporting energy conservation and environmental protection, and developing green concepts to adapt to the “new normal” before it can be in the critical period and turning point. Not lost, or even quit.

Wang Xia also said that despite the difficulties faced by the commercial vehicle industry, China is still the world's largest, most dynamic, most promising commercial vehicle market, and is an open, win-win market.

At the forum, Zhang Wengen, deputy general manager of Jianghuai Automotive Light Commercial Vehicle Marketing Co., Ltd., summarized the “ten changes” of light truck customers. Compared with traditional truck drivers, today's customers are multi-faceted, with a growing customer base, younger and younger, more professional knowledge, more attention to motivation, more emphasis on safety and so on. Therefore, efficiency, fuel economy, brand, and power have become new demands of truck users.

The highlight of this year's commercial vehicle forum is the application and prospect of unmanned technology in the commercial vehicle field shared by Daimler. According to the German Federal Bureau of Statistics, rear-end and lane-drift are the main causes of accidents. Autopilot technology can help reduce accidents by up to two-thirds. For example, the limited-range control system and active brake auxiliary function developed for rear-end collision accidents, and the lane keeping assist function for lane departure accidents.

It is a long-term process that the driver fully controls the driving and develops into a fully automated driverless driver. At present, what has already been applied is partially automated driving, that is, the system can take over the driving direction and horizontal functions under special operating conditions. The driver must continuously monitor the direction of travel and the landscape. However, the implementation of highly automated driving is still affected by factors such as legislation, data protection, and insurance.
