Internationally, most commercial vehicle companies have the ability to build their own engines. Therefore, the only independent engine manufacturers are the Cummins United States. In contrast, domestically, for a long time, commercial vehicle companies require outsourcing in the core component-engine, even if FAW and other companies with their own engine capacity also purchase large quantities of Weichai and Yuchai products.

However, this situation is quietly changing in recent years. Especially in the past 2014, many heavy truck companies joined the ranks of self-produced engines. Among them, the most striking is undoubtedly the cooperation between Futian and Cummins.

Futian Short Board

In 2014, Cummins ISG series heavy-duty engines went into mass production at the new factory in Cummins, Beijing. The new plant has a designed capacity of 60,000 units. At present, this series of engines are mainly carried on the Auman GTL Super Edition models that Foton has just listed. At this point, Foton Motor (Fukuda) has finally overcome its shortcomings in heavy-duty engines and reduced its dependence on Weichai's power.

As early as 2010, Cummins and Fukuda have started cooperation on ISG engine projects. Prior to this, Fukuda originally wanted to obtain large displacement engine technology from Daimler. Since 2003, Fukuda has begun contact with Daimler and wants to establish a joint venture with it to obtain large-displacement engine technology, but it was not until 2010 that the two parties established a joint venture. In 2012, the two parties reached an agreement on the production of engines. However, the actual implementation of the engine has been dragged on. The original scheduled production in 2014 has not yet been realized.

The slow progress in cooperation with Daimler has forced Fukuda to seek additional partners to get rid of dependence on Weichai as soon as possible. As a result, Cummins, who originally had a cooperative relationship, became a new goal for Foton Motor’s cooperation.

According to the plan, Fukuda will jointly invest 2 billion yuan in Cummins and Fukuda Daimler to manufacture ISG engines at manufacturing sites in Brazil and China, and to support Fukuda Daimler's global facilities. This means that the future Foton Cummins engine will digest production capacity in both domestic and overseas markets.

At present, ISG series engines are produced at the new plant of Beijing Foton Cummins Engine Co., Ltd. Its total investment is 2.2 billion yuan, and its annual production capacity is 60,000 units, which can be increased to 120,000 units.

Futian's heavy-duty engine, which is about to be put into operation, has a displacement of 10.5L and 11.8L, which can meet the Euro IV, National IV, and Euro V emission standards, while also enabling the same platform to be upgraded to Euro VI emission standards.

In 2013, Foton heavy truck sales increased by 32% year-on-year to 115,000 vehicles, making it among the first camps in the heavy truck industry. However, at the same time as sales volume increased, the lack of engine products became a short board for Foton Motor. In the first camp of the heavy truck industry, Foton is the only company with no engine core technology.

Previously, Foton Heavy Trucks mainly relied on the procurement of Weichai engines, and Weichai had an absolute advantage in the heavy truck engine supporting field. Weichai Power's 2013 financial report showed that Foton Daimler Motors was the largest customer of Weichai in 2013 and contributed RMB 6.708 billion in orders, accounting for 11.5% of its total sales.

A person in charge of a heavy truck company introduced that Fukuda was eager to overcome its own shortcomings in the engine's core technology. On the one hand, it hoped to reduce its dependence on Weichai's power. On the other hand, after Weichai purchased Weichai Heavy Industries, With its own vehicle factory, for Futian, Weichai is both a partner and a competitor.

Companies follow suit

From 2009 to 2010, when heavy-duty trucks were blowouts, Weichai was hard to find. Numerous heavy-duty trucks must sit in front of Weichai in order to secure some engine resources for their own homes. It was also at that time that many heavy-duty truck companies made a determined effort to embark on the road to self-made engines.

Compared with Dongfeng, Liberation, CNHTC and Shaanxi Automobile Group, which have their own engines, Auman and Valin have been greatly affected when the heavy truck engine resources are in short supply. At the same time, Liu Hanru, head of Hualing, even went to Weifang to personally supervise the team in order to obtain more engine resources.

In November 2012, the Valin Hanmar engine made its debut at the Shanghai BMW Exhibition. Liu Hanru said that Hanma Power is a high-end high-horsepower engine product integrated with Europe's top technology and global supporting resources. It is a large-scale cylinder head, and small to bolts are among the world's best brands. Hanma's engine products have also undergone severe tests of high temperature, cold and high altitude, passed tests of various working conditions and natural environments at home and abroad, and passed practical inspections of users at home and abroad for two years. This product is cost-effective, stable performance, reliable quality, quality is a world-class, the price is China.

The Hanma engine has been on the market for more than two years and no systematic problems have emerged. Reliability, dynamics and fuel economy have performed well. This Waring self-produced engine, which has passed the two-year test, will be fitted in a larger range of Valin's models in the future.

At the same time, by 2014, SAIC Fiat Hongyan Corso engine has become the main force of Shang Yihong. In the quantity of Shang Yihong annual sales of 25,000 vehicles, Corso Power’s number of fittings for Shang Yihong has reached 8,000. Taiwan, more than one-third of the supporting ratio. In addition, in 2014, the Philippine Red's Corso products also added a brand new Corso 13 from a single Corso 9, and in the foreseeable future, Corso 9 and Corso 13 will have a two-pronged approach. Will increase further.

FAW Group has two diesel production bases, namely Xichai and Dachai. In the past, these two companies operated on two legs outside the group's core group, but in recent years, the ratio for the liberation of FAW has increased year by year. The trucks manufactured by FAW's Changchun headquarters base are basically equipped with either Xichai or Dachai engines within FAW Group. FAW Qingdao's products, in addition to the FAW Group's engine, are also equipped with a large number of Weichai engines. FAW-Qingdao Liberation increased its support for FAW Xichai from 2014 and reduced its support for Weichai.

In addition, the engine company jointly invested by JAC and Navistar will also produce heavy-duty engines in the future, and JAC may also adopt the “home-made” engine.

Obviously, self-made engines have become an irreversible trend in the commercial vehicle industry.
