A complaint from the U.S. Department of Justice scuttled the false mask of Daimler, who often used unethical car dealerships such as charity and corporate social responsibility. This German company that became Hitler’s accomplice during World War II has long paid bribery in 22 countries, including China, to increase its market share.
Currently, in the high-end heavy truck market in China, the Mercedes-Benz brand already accounts for 60% of the market share, and the annual sales of Actros and Unimog named by the US Department of Justice are approximately 1,000, accounting for the Mercedes-Benz heavy trucks. In more than half of its operations in China, its customers are mainly PetroChina and Sinopec's subsidiary companies, of which the number of all-terrain vehicle Unimog in China is approximately 3,000. Actros is an engineering tractor that is used in firefighting, oil and coal mining, and liquefied gas transportation.
Daimler China has repeatedly paid bribes
Daimler-Chrysler China Limited (now renamed Daimler Northeast Asia Investment Co., Ltd., hereinafter referred to as Daimler China) is deeply involved in bribery scandals. It is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Daimler in China and is headquartered in Beijing.
According to Daimler China, the company is responsible for Mercedes-Benz vehicles, Mercedes-Benz light commercial vehicles, Daimler trucks, Daimler Northeast Asia parts trade services, and Daimler Finance. Serves business in mainland China, Hong Kong, Taiwan and Korea and manages joint ventures in China. Daimler China's chairman and chief executive is German Holley New. He has held this position since 2006.
Also affiliated with Daimler China is Mercedes-Benz (China) Automobile Sales Co., Ltd. whose president and chief executive is Miles. The US Department of Justice does not specifically state whether the department he heads and bribes Chinese officials. Regardless of the case, Miles is also a member of the Daimler China board of directors.
The president and CEO of the truck division was Wu Weilin and the general manager was Wang Ning. It was this department that was bribed by officials of Sinopec and PetroChina’s subsidiaries.
In addition, Daimler China is also responsible for the management of two joint ventures: Beijing Benz-Daimler-Chrysler Automotive Co., Ltd. and Fujian Daimler Automotive Industry Co., Ltd.
After the Daimler bribery case was sued by the U.S. Department of Justice, Daimler refrained from answering when the Time Weekly reporter wanted to conduct interviews on related issues. "I'm sorry that we can't respond to the case at this time because we agreed with the Securities and Exchange Commission and the U.S. Department of Justice to make no comment before the first hearing on April 1." March 26, Dai Mueller China spokesman Trevor Hale said in an interview with the Times Weekly reporter.
In the US Department of Justice's prosecution documents, most of the Chinese bribery cases involved in the case are related to Daimler's heavy truck sales business in China.
Unimocra corrupt officials launch
According to Daimler China website, at present, Mercedes-Benz trucks only sell imported trucks in China. The main trolley type is Actros heavy-duty trucks suitable for China's special industries such as oil field vehicles, and is the flagship truck of Mercedes-Benz. In addition, there are Axor, Atego, and Econic trucks.
In China, Actros and Atego become two successful Mercedes-Benz trucks because they adapt to a variety of difficult operations.
At the same time, Daimler also provided Unimog and other off-road vehicles in China. In 1950, the Unimog All Terrain Vehicle produced by the Daimler-Benz AG at the Gajnau plant can be used as a round-trip tool for oil explorers in the jungle and desert, forest fire trucks or off-road ambulances, etc. Up to millions of dollars.
At present, there are more than 3,000 Unimog trucks in China. They are mainly concentrated in the Taklamakan region for oil and gas exploration and other operations. The officials of Sinopec and CNPC, which received bribes from Daimler, all purchased Unimog at a high price.
Frequent purchase orders
In addition, in the Chinese market, there are not only several companies involved in the transactions with Daimler's trucks.
In 2003, Xinjiang Guanghui Industrial Investment (Group) Co., Ltd. once purchased 200 Mercedes Actros trucks for the transportation of liquefied natural gas. On March 29, 2005, Guanghui Industrial again purchased 100 Mercedes-Benz Actros2640 heavy trucks.
In May 2007, the People's Bank of China ordered the first batch of 39 Mercedes-Benz armored armored transport vehicles in Chongqing, which were delivered and used by Chongqing Jinguan Automobile Manufacturing Company. The units used included almost all branches of the Central Bank. It is reported that this batch of Mercedes-Benz armored cars by Mercedes-Benz latest Axor truck chassis modified, each maximum load of 8 tons, speeds up to 100 kilometers per hour, the price of up to a million per car, is an ordinary armored car (About 20 million) 5 times more.
In December 2009, China Construction Machinery and Equipment Manufacturing Corporation Zoomlion purchased 360 Mercedes-Benz Actros concrete pump chassis from Daimler. The purchase amounted to nearly RMB 300 million, which was the world’s largest single-duty truck in the year. Prior to 2008, Zoomlion also purchased nearly 500 Mercedes trucks. At the time, the price of a single Actros truck chassis was $90,000. According to the exchange rate at that time, the price of each chassis exceeded 614,592 yuan.
In April 2005, Fujian Chaoda Modern Agricultural Group purchased 11 Mercedes-Benz trucks (10 Actros 2040 trucks and 1 Axor 1840 truck) at one time during the Shanghai Auto Show.
In the heavy-duty truck industry, a single order of 10 vehicles can be regarded as a large single, and the natural performance of Mercedes-Benz, which often wins dozens or hundreds of large orders, has been greatly increased. In December last year, Holley New said that the share of Mercedes-Benz heavy trucks in the Chinese market for high-grade heavy trucks has reached 60%. In 2004, the sales of Mercedes-Benz heavy trucks in China were 200, and in 2005 it reached 900; in 2006, it reached more than 1,000 vehicles. In 2007, this sales volume increased to 1580 vehicles, which accounted for about 47% of the imported high-end truck segment.
In 2008, the sales of Mercedes-Benz trucks in China have reached 2,000 vehicles, accounting for half of the total imported trucks in the country (about 4000 vehicles). According to the price difference at that time, the sales amount of Mercedes-Benz trucks required domestic trucks to be sold for nearly 8,000 vehicles, and domestic trucks had far less profit than Mercedes trucks. From these data, the time for the Mercedes-Benz truck business to soar has coincided with the time it took to bribe. Since Daimler would not provide relevant information, it cannot be judged that the soaring performance has nothing to do with bribery.
