Have you heard of Cummins electric trucks? Cummins cooperates with Canadian Purolator to express new power

On November 15, 2018, it was learned that Cummins cooperated with the Canadian express company Purolator. One of the cooperation projects was to test the pure electric truck driven by Cummins Power Solutions. Purolator courier Alexis Picard said he was driving a pure electric test truck this summer and it feels cool. First of all, there is less heat in the cab, which makes people feel very comfortable during the warm weather in Ottawa. However, what he enjoys most is to see the surprised expression on the customer's face when parking.

Alexis said: "When I saw this car, people's excitement was overwhelming. However, I dare say that what shocked them most was that I didn't have any noise in the car, only the sound system, not the sound system. The engine," he said with a smile. "This feeling is really good."

This electric truck carries the important mission of the two companies to explore a low carbon future. Over the past decade, Purolator has been experimenting with various forms of low-carbon energy for most of the time, and is currently looking for a power system that can truly replace the internal combustion engine in the city, while Cummins has been at the forefront of power upgrades, constantly innovating. Provide users with a variety of power solutions.

Purolator is trying to drive transportation vehicles with alternative energy sources in a variety of ways. For example, the company once owned a diesel-electric hybrid fleet and then experimented with a completely redesigned transport vehicle that was not only powered, but also improved the cab's ergonomics and more efficient use of space. The company even tried to use hydrogen as a source of energy.

Serge Viola, director of asset management at Purolator, said that “not only customers, but also our own employees, want to use low-carbon energy. But we must ensure that any changes are accurate and that the customer's package can be delivered on time, regardless of the circumstances. For Serge, the challenge of implementing electrification can be attributed to three points:

Is the battery cruising range sufficient for the vehicle to run on a longer city route?

Does the car manufacturer have a reliable supply chain and service network to produce the electric vehicles and services provided by Purolator?

Perhaps the most important thing is what happens if a logistics center bursts with power?

On the other hand, Cummins recently established the electric power division. For Cummins, this test truck gives the company the opportunity to learn more about electric power based on the rich experience of hybrid power. Cummins hopes to offer customers a choice of multi-power products including clean diesel, natural gas, hybrid and electric power to allow customers to choose the product that best suits them.

Julie Furber, Executive Director of Cummins Electric Power Division, said, “The cooperation with Purolator allows us to stay at the forefront of innovation and accelerate the pace of learning in this field. We have worked closely with Purolator to design the drive according to customer requirements. The system is integrated into the car. We look forward to applying what we have learned to new development opportunities."

Before the establishment of the electric power division, Cummins began to study the electric drive system. In fact, Cummins' partnership with Purolator dates back to 2016. The test truck has 12 battery modules with a total capacity of 62 kWh. The battery modules can be spliced together like Lego bricks to store and release energy to drive the vehicle.

The test truck has completed 5,304 km of road testing and 6,000 km of bench testing. The test temperature ranges from 10 ° C to 30 ° C and averages about 35 km per day.

Serge said that, up to now, Purolator is satisfied with the test truck. But they want to know how it performs on longer routes and the coldest parts of Canada in winter. At present, the truck can complete the route during the test, and the remaining power is still sufficient when returning to the garage for charging. The company has begun to use it on the 70km route to learn more about its performance limits.

Cummins plans to let the test vehicle travel for 12 months, collect as much information as possible, and apply the information obtained to the company's future products. Cummins is committed to releasing a pure electric drivetrain for urban buses by the end of 2019.

The Cummins electric power business is currently focusing on the electric city bus and truck market as the company believes that the electric vehicle infrastructure in these two markets will be the first to develop. Cummins believes that with its professional manufacturing technology and service network, the company can quickly take the lead in the electric vehicle market.
